About Biohack Factory

Curiosity about the part, impatience with the sales pitch.

The attraction of a small component

An economical biological idea has a particular charm for me: isolate a fragment, give it a job, see whether it earns its place. The appeal is intellectual. There is pleasure in understanding how a proposed shortcut was supposed to work, even if the practical question remains open.

AOD-9604 makes that curiosity concrete. The metabolic studies describe a synthetic domain of growth hormone investigated for fat-metabolism activity. The receptor-knockout mouse experiment then complicates the attractive little mechanism. That combination of ingenuity and awkwardness is exactly the territory I enjoy.

An experiment that can spoil a simple explanation has my respect. I’m less patient with a broad benefit attached to a molecule merely because the mechanism sounds plausible. A useful question can survive a disappointing or incomplete answer. It need not be dressed up as a success.

An editorial project

Biohack Factory is the title of this publication about published research. It is not a business: there are no products, treatment services or appointments here. The workbench is a metaphor for taking an idea apart.

I make no claim to clinical authority. Nothing on these pages is medical advice, and an essay cannot decide whether a treatment suits someone’s health. Questions about personal care require a qualified health professional who can consider the person asking them.

The factory name also leaves room for a certain kind of skepticism. Which part performed the job is the question that bothers me, along with whether a result survives outside the setting that produced it. Ingenious design can be a pleasure to understand without becoming a reason to act.

An answer worth changing

I’m willing to abandon an attractive explanation when a better result demands it. The most useful disagreement with this notebook would point to a particular finding and show why the conclusion needs to move.

The reading list is the place to start with the experiments. The corrections page explains the contact limitation and what would make a research correction specific enough to check.
